Questions and Answers with the Owner of Pata Negra

Pata Negra
Pata Negra is the newest boat to PYC fleet and I have been chatting to the owner about why he picked Pata Negra.

Why did you choose Marc Lombard to design your boat?
“I chose Marc Lombard because he is one of the most successful designers of Offshore Open Class race boats particularly in the Mini, Class 40 and Open 60 classes.  More recently he launched an IRC design the MC34 which won RORC overall in 2013 and 2014.”

What is special about Pata Negra?
“Pata Negra is a big sister of the MC34.  She weighs 7.5 tonnes with 3.5 tonnes in the keel and has a very light high modulus carbon rig from Axxon which together with her large waterline beam make for a very stiff boat.  She is designed to excel in moderate to heavy airs upwind or down and due to her substantial bow volume can be driven hard downwind.  The MC34 regularly exceeded 20 knots downwind, we expect more from the 46.”

What is the ideal crew number when racing is Pata Negra?
“She is designed to be sailed shorthanded as well as fully crewed.  The jib trimming winches are near the centre of the cockpit and the main can be trimmed from the helm.  With twin wheels and twin rudders she is light on the helm and very well mannered.  Pata Negra has a fully fitted interior designed for cruising with the family but also to optimise the number of sea berths for racing.  She has a double forward, 4 singles in the saloon and doubles in each aft cabin with pipe cots above.  12 berths in all if you’re in a Marina or 5 windward berths at sea.”

What is she like to sail?
“She is an absolute joy to surf down big waves in total control.  She is set up with twin headstays and handed jibs, this means as the wind gets over 20 knots you simply drop the J1 onto the deck and hoist the J3.  She has a 1.5m bowsprit for using the A0, A2 and A5.  The A5 is on a fractional halyard to keep the centre of effort lower in a blow.”

This does indeed sound like a fantastic and versatile yacht, I look forward to getting the opportunity to race on her.
