Round the Island Race 2018

By July 10, 2018Uncategorized

In what many are calling one of the most challenging and slowest races on record, the 87th edition of the Round the Island Race, in association with Cloudy Bay, did not disappoint.

PYC had three boats on the water; Venomous, a CM 60 sailing under the name “Cloudy Bay”, a MOD 70 Concise Fling and Dusty P a First 40.

Concise Fling – Line Honours

The foiling MOD 70 Concise Fling, with Irvine Laidlaw on the helm, crossed the finish line at 15:14:09 with an elapsed time of 8:34:09, making this one of the slowest line honours times recorded in the race’s history,   more than six hours than it took them last year when they broke the multihull record.

Their progress was hindered as they passed through the Forts, when the wind shut off completely, leaving them floundering and a ‘traffic jam’ building up behind.

Cloudy Bay

After a fantastic sunrise the crew on Cloudy Bay were pleased to find some breeze on the beat to the Needles which was followed by an enjoyable spinnaker run down the back of the island. The conditions were challenging, with the wind coming and going as the sea breeze tried to fill in. They made the call to head for the mainland shore as they sailed up the Solent towards Cowes, which unfortunately didn’t pay off, and Cloudy Bay found themselves in one of the many wind holes that dotted the Solent.

Cloudy Bay with Ben Fogle onboard eventually finished in 10:15:00.

Dusty P – First 40

The last PYC boat to finish was Dusty P, finishing in 11:18:18. The crew travelled from China specially for this event, and invited Chinese Olympian Lijia Xu to sail with them.
The team thoroughly enjoyed their race and were even treated to a tour of the Royal Yacht Squadron on Sunday.
